Filmul este inspirat din viaţa reală a Marthei Stewart.În copilărie, pentru Martha (Cybill Stepherd) era foarte dificil să-şi facă prieteni din cauza nevoii sale permanente de a fi cea mai bună şi de a-şi mulţumi tatăl.

Ea este foarte frumoasă şi dotată cu o inteligenţă sclipitoare. Ajunsă la colegiu îl cunoaşte pe Andy Seward (Tim Matheson) cu care se căsătoreşte şi au împreună o feţiţă. Datorită modului în care a fost crescută, nu este pregătită să devină o soţie de suburbie şi rolul acesta nu o mulţumeşte, ştiind că poate mai mult.
Martha intră în lumea afacerilor ÅŸi face o carieră de succes în televiziune. ÃŽnsă, toate acestea au un preÅ£, ea îşi sacrifică familia ÅŸi prietenii pentru a-ÅŸi menÅ£ine poziÅ£ia obÅ£inută.
